Transitioning Your Dog to Real Food
You have made a wonderful decision to start feeding your dog real food.
To ensure a successful transition from kibble to real food, make the change gradually. Most dogs are accustomed to eating the same highly processed food for every meal. Changing your dog’s diet too quickly can result in diarrhea, upset stomach, gas, or vomiting. Every dog is unique and the speed at which your dog is able to make the transition may vary from the guideline given below. For small dogs, measure using a teaspoon and for larger dogs use a tablespoon.
Week 1. Stir in 1 level spoonful of Sierra Tails to each meal.
Week 2. Stir in 2 level spoonfuls of Sierra Tails to each meal. Reduce the amount of kibble by 1 spoonful.
Week 3. Stir in 3 level spoonfuls of Sierra Tails to each meal. Feed the same amount of kibble as in Week 2.
Week 4. Stir in 4 level spoonfuls of Sierra Tails to each meal. Reduce the amount of kibble by an additional spoonful.
In the weeks that follow, you can continue to add an additional spoonful of Sierra Tails to your dog’s meals each week and reduce the amount of kibble by an additional spoonful every other week. Continue this process until your dog has transitioned completely from kibble to Sierra Tails or is eating the desired amount of Sierra Tails mixed with kibble.
If you notice that your dog is having difficulty adjusting to Sierra Tails, revert to the amount of Sierra Tails fed the during the previous week until he is comfortable again.
